The rental problem is always the same. The landlord picked the lighting and the floors, and both were picked to offend nobody. Inoffensive is cold. Step one: turn off the big light
Rental ceiling fixtures are almost always cool white and dead center, like an interrogation room. After sunset, leave it off. Replace it with at least two low lights at different heights, a table lamp plus something down at floor or wall level, and the room shrinks in the good way. Cozy is mostly a lighting decision.

Style it Aim it low at the emptiest wall. Keep it on the orange setting instead of cycling colors and it reads as golden hour. The rainbow modes read as a dorm room.
Step two: cover the floor you did not choose
Rental floors come in two flavors, grey vinyl plank or beige carpet, and both are cold. A washable rug is the renter's best friend here. Fall means boots and mud, and a rug you can throw in the washer is a rug you will actually let people walk on.

What it is An 8x10 vintage-floral rug with a non-slip back that goes in the washing machine. It looks inherited. Nobody needs to know about the washer.
Style it Size up. In a living room, at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. A small rug floating in the middle of the floor makes a rental look even more like a rental.
Step three: add the fire you are allowed to have
Most leases frown on a fireplace you install yourself. Candles are the workaround, and tapers look far more intentional than a jar candle from the grocery store. Group them on the dining table or a windowsill and light them for dinner even when it is just you and leftovers. Keep real flames well away from curtains, and if your lease or your cat objects, flameless tapers look almost as good.

Style it Cluster all three off-center on the table with one small bud vase. Uneven heights look styled. Three matching holders in a straight row look like a hotel lobby.
Step four: soften every hard surface
Rentals are hard everywhere: hard floors, hard walls, hard light. Every textile you add pulls the other way. Throw a blanket over the sofa arm, set round velvet pillows in front of the square ones, and trade the summer covers for burnt orange ones. You are changing covers, not furniture, which is exactly the right fall budget for a renter.
